FAQs
What is lime?
Lime is derived from rocks and minerals that are composed primarily of calcium carbonate, such as limestone. When limestone is burnt, it produces quicklime, the addition of water turns this into slaked lime and the resulting putty or powder is mixed with sand to make lime mortars, renders and plasters.
Why use Lime?
Lime has been used as a building material for centuries thanks to its durability and visual impact. Many of Britain’s historic buildings were constructed using lime-based products and this has contributed to their longevity and aesthetic qualities. This proven finessed method has led many of today’s builders to rediscover the benefit and pleasure of using lime-based materials.
Lime is considered to be a superior building material because it allows buildings to breathe and move, reducing the risk of trapped moisture and preventing damage to the building fabric.
Are Lime based products easy to work with?
They are considered easy to work with, remaining smooth and malleable. They also give a beautiful finish that develops a rich patina over time.
Are there ecological benefits?
Yes, there are several. You can read about some of the environmental benefits of lime over in our blog.
What are the benefits of lime compared with cement?
Unlike lime, cement sets rigid and has low moisture permeability which means it’s not compatible with soft and porous materials. In fact, it’s thought that cement may even damage such materials. Cement-based products also don’t have the same aesthetic qualities as lime mortars, renders and plasters which is why lime is becoming an increasingly popular choice for today’s builders.
How long will Lime render last?
A lime render with a lime wash coat will last approximately 3-4 years before needing to reapply a fresh coat.
With a specialist paint for finish, it will last around 10 years – possibly more depending on location and weather conditions. Of course, specialist paint can be a slightly more expensive upfront cost, its durability can make it a worthy investment.
How much do your services cost?
It’s important to remember that by choosing expert stonemasonry and using traditional lime products, costs can vary – especially when compared with more contemporary building techniques adopted in recent years. Whilst lime-based stonemasonry can have higher upfront costs than standard brickwork, using the right materials and expert application can be a beneficial investment for your property for years to come.
As every project is unique, size and scale can vary and because of this we do offer a free survey service; it means we can provide you with an accurate quote with a full breakdown for your project, tailored to your needs.
What areas do you cover?
Based in the heart of the Cotswolds, we’re able to provide services across Gloucestershire, Somerset, and the surrounding areas, including Bristol, Bath, Swindon, and Oxford. Get in touch with our team if you’d like to check if your area is covered.
What is your availability?
We will carry out a free survey within 14 working days and we currently aim to commence new projects within 3-6 months following a completed survey and agreed terms.
