FAQ’s
What is lime?
Lime is derived from rocks and minerals that are composed primarily of calcium carbonate, such as limestone. When limestone is burnt, it produces quicklime, the addition of water turns this into slaked lime and the resulting putty or powder is mixed with sand to make lime mortars, renders and plasters.
Why use Lime?
Lime has been used as a building material for centuries thanks to its durability and visual impact. Many of Britain’s historic buildings were constructed using lime-based products and this has contributed to their longevity and aesthetic qualities. This knowledge has led many of today’s builders to rediscover the benefit and pleasure of using lime-based materials.
Lime is considered to be a superior building material because it allows buildings to breathe and move, reducing the risk of trapped moisture and preventing damage to the building fabric.
Are Lime based products easy to work with?
They are considered easy to work with, remaining smooth and malleable. They also give a beautiful finish that develops a rich patina over time.
Are there ecological benefits?
Yes, there are several. Including that is uses less embodied energy than cement with the added benefit that it can be produced on a small scale.
What are the benefits of lime compared with cement?
Unlike Lime, cement sets rigid and has low moisture permeability which means it is not compatible with soft and porous materials. In fact, it is thought that cement may even damage such materials. Cement-based products do not have the same aesthetic qualities as lime mortars, renders and plasters which is which Lime is becoming an increasingly popular choice for today’s builders.
How long will Lime render last?
A lime render with a lime wash coat will last approximately 3-4 years before you will need to re-do the coat.
With a specialist paint, although a slightly more expensive investment, will last around 10 years – possibly more depending on location and weather conditions.
How much do your services cost?
We do offer a free survey where we will be able to provide a quote to include a full breakdown for your project.
