External Wall Repointing

The existing defective pointing must first be raked out to a depth. Using a grinder and plugging chisel ensures that the stone or bricks aren’t forced apart. Once any loose material is brushed away, the joints must be dampened and then left for the stone or brick faces to dry to prevent smearing. Using a pointing spatula the new mortar is then applied, being forced into the joints that had previously been raked out.

When the lime pointing is firm enough to brush without smearing but still malleable enough to work, we brush or tamp the joints to remove the patina of lime on the surface of the mortar. This is done to enhance the appearance by exposing the coloured aggregate in the mortar.

Once the process is finished we cover the wall with hessian cloth to protect the new lime pointing whilst it dries.
